The Wind Rises – A highly fictionalized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II. Animated and directed by Hayao Miyazak

Earth to Echo – After receiving a bizarre series of encrypted messages, a group of kids embark on an adventure with an alien who needs their help. This is a Walt Disney Studio film and is rated PG.

The Fluffy Movie: Unity Through Laughter – A comedy concert film that captures the on-stage performance and inspirational success story of Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias.  Rated PG-13 for suggestive material and sexual references.  You will find this movie in our nonfiction DVD section.  The call number is DV 792.

Purge: Anarchy – A young couple works to survive on the streets after their car breaks down right as the annual purge commences.  This is a sequel to the first Purge movie. Despite mixed reviews, the original film grossed $89,328,627 during its run, far surpassing its $3 million budget. Both movies are based on the same premise. That in order to stimulate the economy and rid society of the homeless and poor, the government allows a 12 hour purge in which all criminal activity  is legalized and no emergency services will be delivered.  This film is rated R.

Sex Tape – A married couple wake up to discover that the sex tape they made the evening before has gone missing, leading to a frantic search for its whereabouts. Starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel.  Despite the big actors in this film, it did not do well with the critics or in audience reviews and as of September, hadn’t even made back its original budget in box office receipts.  Rated R.

Snowpiercer – Set in a future where a failed climate-change experiment kills all life on the planet except for a lucky few who boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe, where a class system emerges.  This film received a 95% fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes and 76% of audience reviews were positive.  This is an action Sci-Fi thriller rated R.

New DVDs Tuesday, October 14

Mr. Peabody & Sherman – The time-traveling adventures of an advanced canine and his adopted son, as they endeavor to fix a time rift they created.  Animated. Rate PG.

Persecuted – An evangelist finds himself framed for murder and on the run after he refuses to back a senator’s proposition calling for sweeping religious reform. Dove approved.

X-Men: Days of Future Past – The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.  SPOILER: There is a scene at the end of the closing credits: a mutant stands in front of a crowd chanting his name, as he telekinetically assembles a pyramid in the air. This leads into  X-Men: Apocalypse (2016).

New DVDs – September 30 & October 7

Wow! That’s a lot of DVDs!  This is what happens when I miss a week.  You’ll notice the Christmas movies are starting to arrive.  Shudder / Yeah!,  depending on your mood. Here’s a link to place a hold.

Chef – A chef who loses his restaurant job starts up a food truck in an effort to reclaim his creative promise, while piecing back together his estranged family.

Christmas Grace – Christmas Grace tells the story of two rival toy store owners during Christmas time. Gary, who runs an honest business and has a good relationship with his customers. Everything is running smooth for Gary until he hears of a new bigger store opening up across the street from him. This owner, Jim, is a ruthless businessman who will stop at nothing to grow his business and eliminate his competition. Dove Family Approved.

Edge of Tomorrow: Live. Die. Repeat. –   An officer finds himself caught in a time loop in a war with the alien race. His skills increase as he faces the same brutal combat scenarios, and his union with a Special Forces warrior gets him closer to defeating the enemy.  The movie stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and received a 90% on the tomatometer from Rotten Tomatoes.  But, wait a minute, you think. The DVD have a different name than the movie? Yes. Edge of Tomorrow “did pretty terribly at the box office.” In a hope to market the DVD better than the movie, Warner Bros. re-named it Live. Die. Repeat.

The Good Witch’s Charm – This is a 2012 TV movie in the Good Witch series.

The Grand Seduction – To survive, a dying Newfoundland fishing village must convince a young doctor to take up residence by any means necessary.

Million Dollar Arm – A sports agent stages an unconventional recruitment strategy to get talented Indian cricket players to play Major League Baseball. This is rated PG.

A Million Days to Die in the West – As a cowardly farmer begins to fall for the mysterious new woman in town, he must put his new-found courage to the test when her husband, a notorious gun-slinger, announces his arrival.  Even though this film has some big names (Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris, Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron) it did not receive great reviews. 

Mostly Ghostly: Have you Met My Ghoulfriend?  – Max only has eyes for Cammy, the smart, popular redhead at school. When Max finally scores a date with Cammy on Halloween, Phears, an evil ghost with plans on taking over the world, unleashes his ghouls and things go haywire. This is rated PG.

Obvious Child – A  twenty-something comedienne’s unplanned pregnancy forces her to confront the realities of independent womanhood for the first time.

 Sharknado 2: The Second One – The sharks are back and still falling from the sky. This is supposed to be slightly better than Sharknado.

Transformers: Age of Extinction – Surviving Autobots must escape from a bounty hunter who takes domination of human existence: Unexpectedly, the Autobots turn to a mechanic and his daughter for help.

A slew of new, DVDs that is.  Mostly TV shows.  You can place a hold here.

Born to Race: Fast Track – Danny Krueger is a twenty-year old street racer who plays by his own rules. After winning a scholarship to the prestigious Fast Lane Racing Academy, Danny finds himself competing against some of the fiercest young drivers in the world.

Ida – (Language: Polish) Anna, a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland, is on the verge of taking her vows when she discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of the Nazi occupation. This film has won 27 awards in mostly foreign film festivals.  Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 95 out a of 100.

Neighbors – A couple with a newborn baby face unexpected difficulties after they are forced to live next to a fraternity house.  This has a huge cast, about 85 people. Most of the cast is uncredited “party goer” or “sorority girl.”  Baby Stella is played by Elise and Zoey Vargas.  This duo is already onto their second film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day which comes out in theaters next month. Be sure to watch the end credits on this one.

Petals in the Wind – A decade after Cathy, Christopher, and Carrie escaped from their grandparents’ attic at Foxworth Hall, Petals on the Wind continues to follow the twisted plight of the family as they attempt to put their sordid past behind them, but soon discover certain secrets can’t be left behind.  This is a sequel to the story Flowers in the Attic.  Originally a TV movie that aired earlier this year.

The Rover – 10 years after a global economic collapse, a hardened loner pursues the men who stole his only possession, his car. Along the way, he captures one of the thieves’ brother, and the duo form an uneasy bond during the dangerous journey.

We Are the Best – (Language: Swedish) Three girls in 1980s Stockholm decide to form a punk band — despite not having any instruments and being told by everyone that punk is dead.  This movie has also won several awards and get s 97 out of 100 from Rotten Tomatoes.  “A tender tribute to the bittersweet tumult of adolescence–” Rotten Tomatoes

The Fault in our Stars – Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel’s other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. This movie is based on the book by John Green.

Godzilla – The world’s most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. This is the 60th anniversary of the first Godzilla film. A bit of trivia for you – Godzilla is covered in scars. The original Godzilla in 1954 was also heavily scarred to evoke the gruesome marks borne by the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

Think Like a Man Too – All the couples are back for a wedding in Las Vegas, but plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event. This is a sequel to Think Like a Man and is inspired by Steve Harvey’s best-selling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man.

We added a lot of new DVDs this morning.

Brick Mansions – An undercover Detroit cop navigates a dangerous neighborhood that’s surrounded by a containment wall with the help of an ex-con in order to bring down a crime lord and his plot to devastate the entire city. This stars Paul Walker who is also featured in the Fast & Furious series.  He died in a car accident in November 2013.

Captain America: The Winter Solider – Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.  Steve has his “catch up” list. This lists varies from country to country, depending on where the film is shown.  Click here to read the different lists.
Fed Up – An examination of America’s obesity epidemic and the food industry’s role in aggravating it.

The Galapagos Affair – A true-crime documentary about a 1930s murder. Fleeing conventional society, a Berlin doctor and his mistress start a new life on uninhabited Floreana Island. But after the international press sensationalizes the exploits of the island s Adam and Eve , others flock there including a self-styled Swiss Family Robinson and a gun-toting Viennese Baroness and her two lovers. Things would never be the same.

Night Moves – Three radical environmentalists look to execute the protest of their lives: the explosion of a hydroelectric dam.  Here’s an article about the real dam in the movie and the lawsuit associated with the filming of Night Moves.

Palo Alto – Shy, sensitive April is the class virgin, torn between an illicit flirtation with her soccer coach Mr. B and an unrequited crush on sweet stoner Teddy. Emily, meanwhile, offers sexual favors to every boy to cross her path – including both Teddy and his best friend Fred, a live wire without filters or boundaries. As one high school party bleeds into the next – and April and Teddy struggle to admit their mutual affection – Fred’s escalating recklessness starts to spiral into chaos.  This stars Emma Roberts as April.

Refuge – After their parents abandon the family, a young woman works to take care of her younger siblings.

They Came Together – When Joel and Molly meet, it’s hate at first sight: his big Corporate Candy Company threatens to shut down her quirky indie shop. Plus, Joel is hung up on his sexy ex. But amazingly, they fall in love, until they break up about two thirds of the way through.  They Came Together is a parody of the typical romantic comedy and stars Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.

Words with Pictures – An art instructor and an English teacher form a rivalry that ends up with a competition at their school in which students decide whether words or pictures are more important. This is rated PG-13.
