Generation Iron – A documentary that follows top bodybuilders as they train to compete in the Mr. Olympia competition.

Her – A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that’s designed to meet his every need. This movie was nominated for 5 Oscars and won Best Writing, Original Screenplay.

I, Frankenstein – Frankenstein’s creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans, gargoyles and demons.

Nearlyweds – A Hallmark Channel movie – Three friends have dream weddings but then find out that the pastor who married them failed to complete the key paperwork required to make them official.

That Awkward Moment – Three best friends find themselves in confusing dating relationships.  This is a romantic comedy from the guy’s perspective. Stars Zac Efron.

TV Shows

Eastbound & Down, season 4 – If you haven’t discovered this TV series, it is about a burned-out major league ballplayer who returns to his hometown to teach phys ed at his old middle school.

Garrow’s Law, series 3 – Garrow’s Law is the true tale of William Garrow, who acted as counsel for the accused, introducing the concept of ‘innocent until proved guilty’ at London’s Old Bailey.  This is a BBC historical legal show.
Longmire, season 2 – Based on the book series by Craig Johnson. A police drama about Walt Longmire, the sheriff of the fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming.

Orange is the New Black, season 1 – The story of Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to fifteen months in prison after being convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting money for her drug-dealing girlfriend.  You might know that this Netflix series is based on the memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman.  You can watch a TED talk by Piper here about life in prison.

New DVDs

We have received a lot of new DVDs in the past two week.  Take a look and place a hold if you wish.


Arranged – This film centers on the friendship between an Orthodox Jewish woman and a Muslim woman who meet as first-year teachers at a public school in Brooklyn. Over the course of the year they learn they share much in common – not least of which is that they are both going through the process of arranged marriages.
Art of the Steal – Crunch Calhoun, a semi-reformed art thief, agrees to get his old gang back together to pull off one last heist.
Devil’s Due – After a mysterious, lost night on their honeymoon, a newlywed couple finds themselves dealing with an earlier-than-planned pregnancy.  This is being reviewed as a really bad knock-off of Rosemary’s Baby.
Gloria – Set in Santiago, Chile, Gloria is a free-spirited older woman. She has a whirlwind relationship with a former naval officer whom she meets out in the clubs.
Gimme Shelter – A pregnant teenager flees her abusive mother in search of her father, only to be rejected by her dad and forced to survive on the streets until a compassionate stranger offers a hopeful alternative. Stars Vanessa Hudgens.

Hours – A father struggles to keep his critically ill newborn daughter alive in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. This movie stars Paul Walker who died last year in a car crash. Walker was also featured in the Fast and Furious series.
Labor Day – Based on the novel by Joyce Maynard. Depressed single mom Adele and her son Henry offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited.
The Legend of Hercules – The origin story of the the mythical Greek hero. Betrayed by his stepfather, the King, and exiled and sold into slavery because of a forbidden love, Hercules must use his formidable powers to fight his way back to his rightful kingdom.

Still Mine – An elderly couple fight against local authorities in rural New Brunswick to build their final home. This is a Canadian film and stars James Cromwell.  Mr. Cromwell has done many films and TV shows, but he will always be Farmer Hoggett from Babe to me.

Veronica Mars  – Years after walking away from her past as a teenage private eye, Veronica Mars gets pulled back to her hometown – just in time for her high school reunion – in order to help her old flame Logan Echolls, who’s embroiled in a murder mystery. How this movie got made is a story in itself.  Read about that here.

A new TV Series:

Detective Montalbano, seasons 1-26 – This is an Italian television series based on the detective novels of Andrea Camilleri. The protagonist is Commissario Salvo Montalbano and the stories are set in the imaginary town of Vigata, Sicily. The series is in Italian and English subtitles.
